“I’d rather be at Bunnings than have my photo taken.”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard a variation of this from successful, confident business leaders… Well, let’s just say I’d have quite a collection of power tools by now.

Here’s the thing – being camera-shy has nothing to do with how successful, confident, or capable you are. Some of the most accomplished leaders I’ve photographed initially tried to dodge the lens like it was a summons to jury duty.

The Myth of the “Photogenic” Person

Let me let you in on a secret: being photogenic isn’t a genetic gift bestowed upon a lucky few. It’s about feeling comfortable enough to be yourself. And that’s where the magic happens in my sessions – not in fancy lighting techniques or post-production tricks, but in those moments when you forget you’re being photographed.

From Resistance to Resonance

“I just never look natural in photos,” Sarah, a Melbourne CEO, told me before her session. By the end, she was laughing at how much she’d built it up in her mind. The difference? We approached it as a conversation with a camera present, not a performance for it.

The Technical Truth About Looking Natural

While I handle all the technical aspects – the lighting, composition, and timing – your only job is to be yourself. No awkward poses. No “say cheese” moments. Just genuine interactions that capture your authentic professional presence.

 “Just get it over with,”

Mark, a financial services director, initially booked the shortest possible session. “Just get it over with,” was his exact request. Two hours later, he was suggesting locations for additional shots because he’d discovered something unexpected – he actually enjoyed the process.

Breaking Down the Barriers

Here’s what typically makes people camera-shy:

– Fear of looking unnatural or stiff

– Bad experiences with previous photoshoots

– Uncertainty about how to pose or what to do

– Concerns about aging or appearance

– Feeling vulnerable or exposed

The solution isn’t to overcome these feelings – it’s to work with them. To create an environment where they naturally dissolve into genuine moments.

“That was surprisingly enjoyable.”

The most common feedback I get? “That was surprisingly enjoyable.” Because when you strip away the pressure to perform and create a space where people can simply be themselves, something shifts. The camera becomes secondary to the experience.
