Feed My Soul
Dear Photography,
You’ve been with me since I was 12, when my father gave me that old Pentax. But our story really began when I was 5, watching Sir David Attenborough’s “Life on Earth”. That’s when the spark was lit.
Through you, I’ve spent months on the African continent, going out on safari or just sitting quietly, observing and photographing wildlife for hours. For all the fight, flight or freeze out on the savannah, there’s also a lot of love. Nothing makes you hold your breath more than capturing the concern of a lioness helping each of her cubs navigate a rock face to safety.

I love the interplay of light and shadow and how it creates depth and different moods. Being able to look for and control light to enhance and tell that story and where required, create the drama. Drowning in nature is the ultimate for me but for all the getting down and dirty, what can I say, I love fashion, beautiful things and stylish spaces too. Maybe it’s the Taurean in me, I can’t fight it.
I’m a big fan of cinema and particularly love how the crafted interplay of light, shadow and different colours can help shape and enhance the mood and personality of a story and its characters. I like to bring this drama and narrative to my personal work. My creative personal projects happily swing wildly between journalistic and highly crafted imagery, influenced by the contrasting work of Kirsten Lewis, Lindsay Adler & Annie Leibovitz.
I see the world in vibrant colour and where colour doesn’t add value to an image, I simply remove it altogether. Black and white imagery will always be timeless. My creative work is as much about the process and preparation as it is about the final image. I’m not a big fan of filters and like to create most of the final image ‘in camera’.
Photography is a lifelong learning exercise for me. I strive for my photographs and importantly the experience to be memorable. And to be memorable each image needs to tell a story, big or small.
Thank you for being my window to the world, my time machine, and my storytelling tool.
With love and gratitude,
Alese
